Beppu
A group of eight hot spring towns
In the Eastern side of the island of Kyushu, lies Beppu, famous for its volcanic hot springs. With steam rising from vents all over the place here you know that an onsen is never far away if the idea to take a long hot soak takes your fancy. Today you will walk the “Tour of Hell” multicolored volcanic pits of boiling water and mud, and one geyser, known as the “Eight Hells”. One of the more picturesque of these is named the “Blood Pond”. 20 km inland from Beppu is Yufuin a Resort Hot Spring town, housing a wealth of art museums, cafes and boutiques and surrounded by mountains.
For food let’s try the locally caught seafood, in particular, “Seki mackerel” and “Seki horse mackerel,” fished by local fishermen using a pole-and-line method and put into a fish tank to prevent injury. Eaten as sashimi, the lean flesh has an almost crunchy texture with a moderate amount of fat and a rich flavor.
