Omishima

An island of artistic and religious significance

Today you will explore this stunningly beautiful island situated between the mainland of Honshu and Shikoku.
You will begin in the middle of the island at the Oyamazumi Shrine, despite its remoteness it is one of the most important Shinto Shrinesin all Japan, surrounded by Camphor Trees that are thousands of years old. Historical Samurai Warlords would come all the way here to Oyamazumi, to pray for victory, and if they met with success, they deposited their arms as tribute to the gods. We will later view these weapons at the Treasure House.
Across from this Shrine is the Omishima Museum of Art with four rooms dedicated to rotating, and special exhibitions.
