Himeji
Japan’s first World Cultural Heritage Site
Have a stop in Himeji to visit another UNESCO World Heritage site – Himeji Castle.
Regarded as the finest castle in all Japan, it is nicknamed Shirasagi-jō “White Heron Castle” because of its bright white exterior and that the shape of the castle layout centered on the five-tiered donjon resembled an egret or heron about to take flight.
It is known as the castle that the world recognizes as the symbol of Japan. It was started in the 14th century, but it reached its present form in the beginning of the 17th century taking eight years and required the labor of over 24,300,000 men.
The donjon is about 31.5 m in height, over 46m including the stone wall, and is designated a National Treasure along with other buildings.
