Kamakura
A cultured seaside retreat right on the doorstep of the capital
Kamakura is one of the ancient capitals of Japan and is home to the Great Bronze Buddha.
Secluded in Eastern Kamakura is the unassuming Hokokuji temple of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism and the family temple of the powerful Ashikaga and Uesugi Clans. Enjoy traditional tea in the tea house, which is deep in the beautiful bamboo grove behind the temple and close to the shallow caves carved into the hillsides that hold the ashes of some of the later Ashikaga lords.
For the more adventurous, hiking trails in the hills of Kamakura are a great way to enjoy nature and visit various sights.
The Torii gates lining the center of Kamakura lead to the Tsurugsoka Hachimangu, over 1,000 years old and dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of all Samurai. The deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin, Hime-gami and Empress Jingu are enshrined at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
