Okushiri

A far northern island dubbed “Okushiri blue”

In 1993 an earthquake and tsunami claimed the lives of 200 people on this island whose Japanese symbols for the name mean “Wife’s buttocks “. Following the quake the Japanese Government spent billions of dollars on reconstruction of the island. For an interesting read, Google the NY Times article on the outcome of the reconstruction.
Local Taxi’s will be available to take you around the island stopping at points of interest and on the rugged Western Coast where an arch has been sculpted by the ocean.
Finish your stop on the Western Coast at the Yunohana Onsen for not just physical and mental relaxation but numerous other health benefits that natural hot springs provide.
