Hakodate

The picturesque city renowned for its fresh seafood and splendid night view

This was one of the first ports in Japan to open to Foreign Trade apparent in the many Western Churches and Consulates in the old area of Motomachi. This area makes for a lovely walking tour along the elevated tree lined streets with views over the port.
Near to the station the Asaichi Fish Market begins at 5am every morning. Hakodate is renowned for its crab, squid and fish roe, the morning market being a premium spot to sample the freshest of these.
At night take the cable car up to Mt Hakodate for splendid views lit up by the bright lights on hundreds of squid boats out in the bay.
What is now the Central Business District of Hakodate lies the Star Fort - Goryokaku meaning five sides. Built at the end of the Edo Period it was based on a French design allowing for greater numbers of gun emplacements and eliminating blind spots. A tower at the entrance to the fort allows for a bird’s eye view of the fort – spectacular in the Cherry Blossom season at the beginning of May.
